Kiwi food & Shopping in London

On a Friday night after a good week at work, Vivienne, John and Jane hit Marylebone High Street (and to stop all those arguments, it is locally pronounced as Marly-bone). Promising to return to shop in the street it is alleged Madonna shops in, we hastened into the Tapas Room (one of Peter Gordon's restaurants). What a find! The food, wine and service were first rate. A lovely Kiwi girl from West Auckland looked after us, the tapas were fresh and so very, very tasty. The bottle of Pegasus Bay Reisling was like nectar.

Vivienne and I liked it so much that we decided we would meet there for brunch and a spot of High Street shopping on Saturday. Unfortunately (as you may be able tell from the above photo which I took on Saturday lunchtime), there was a queue to get in and it was like that the whole time we were there. We abandoned that plan and had to settle for something far more humble.

You can read another review of the restaurant, this time from the Time Out - just in case you need another opinion. http://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/reviews/4672.html

This link will show you more about the area of Marylebone High Street: http://www.streetsensation.co.uk/marybone/mh_intro.htm

We discovered Daunt, an amazing book shop and got ourselves tickets to hear Lloyd Jones talk about Mister Pip on Wednesday night next week. There are some delightful shops in that general area, it's good to get away from the chain stores and into some of the boutiques. There were some fabulous clothes, shoes and accessories - and a whole bunch of shops in one area for those who are tall and with big feet (not much use for me at all!). One little problem with shopping in this area however; the price. We will come back when there are sales on or when we have Madonna-like incomes. Here's a picture of Vivienne on Oxford Street which is where we had planned on walking down to Selfridges and then catching the tube.

Some of you may think shopping in Oxford Street may be fun - not for me on a Saturday afternoon as there are thousands and thousands of people. Far too many for me - "get me out of here" was the call so instead we scurried off to the tranquility of Hyde Park for a bit of late afternoon sun. I think there may be a rugby game on tonight to watch....
